As seasons change, so does your wardrobe. Proper storage of off-season clothing protects your investment and ensures your garments are ready to wear when you need them again. Here's how to store your seasonal items correctly.
The Golden Rule: Clean Before Storing
Never store dirty clothes. Body oils, perfume residue, and invisible food spills attract moths and can cause permanent staining over time. Even if an item looks clean, have it cleaned before long-term storage. This is especially important for wool, silk, and other natural fibres that moths love.
Choosing the Right Storage Location
Ideal Conditions: - Cool and dry (avoid basements and attics with temperature extremes) - Dark (light can fade colours over time) - Well-ventilated (prevents musty odours and mildew) - Away from direct heat sources
Avoid: - Plastic bags (trap moisture and cause yellowing) - Cardboard boxes in humid areas (absorb moisture) - Areas with strong odours (fabrics absorb smells) - Anywhere with pest problems
Storage Methods by Garment Type
Wool Sweaters and Knits: Fold and store in breathable cotton storage bags or boxes lined with acid-free tissue paper. Never hang knits - they'll stretch.
Suits and Structured Jackets: Hang on proper wooden or padded hangers in breathable garment bags. Allow space between items for air circulation.
Formal Dresses: Hang in breathable garment bags. For very heavy or beaded dresses, pad the hanger shoulders and consider additional support to prevent stretching.
Winter Coats: Clean professionally, then store in breathable bags. Stuff sleeves with acid-free tissue to maintain shape.
Leather and Suede: These need to breathe - never use plastic. Store with adequate space and consider leather conditioning before storage.
Protecting Against Moths
Moths are attracted to natural fibres, especially wool, cashmere, and silk. Prevention is key:
Natural Deterrents: - Cedar blocks or cedar-lined storage (refresh cedar annually by sanding) - Lavender sachets - Regular inspection and airing of stored items
What Doesn't Work: - Mothballs (toxic and leave lingering odour) - Essential oils alone (not strong enough)
If you discover moth damage, have affected items professionally cleaned immediately and inspect all nearby garments.
Before Bringing Items Back Out
When the season changes:
1. Inspect items for any damage, stains, or odours 2. Air out garments before wearing 3. Steam or press if needed to remove storage creases 4. Check for any repairs needed (loose buttons, small tears)
Items that smell musty or show any signs of mildew should be professionally cleaned before wearing.
